Commenting on a series of dismissals at the Western Customs, deputy head of the Volyn Customs Stepan Petrus said, speaking at a press conference: “Recent purges of corrupt customs officials is part of the policy of the new Customs Committee head, Valery Khoroshkovsky. Customs officials are fired for the slightest violation. There’re no grounds to sack our officers,” he said March 21. -To quote the Volyn customs deputy chief, “We are trying to pre-empt any developments. Now we want to fire an officer for imbibing booze while on duty. In this way, we are cleansing our ranks and get rid of those who give the Volyn customs and the State Customs Service a black eye. It is difficult to evaluate the damage done by this drunk officer, though. But all those who violate procedures will be punished. We have also introduced collective responsibility for service violations.”

March 14, head of the State Customs Service of Ukraine and billionaire Valery Khoroshkovsky fired head of the Lviv customs and 14 heads of border customs offices in the Lviv oblast and appointed new ones.
SCS head gave two months to newly appointed Lviv customs officials to rectify the situation. If they fail to do so, he warned, they will be dismissed. “I’ll keep on firing corrupt officials until I put things in order at the customs,” Khoroshkovsky said.
