“As soon as the parliamentary crisis turned the corner, the way was clear for presidential campaign to start. There are 2 real contenders for the highest office, Yushchenko and Tymoshenko. Yanukovych has basically an auxiliary role, and he will side with either Yushchwnko or Tymoshenko,” Mykhailo Syrota of Lytvyn bloc and leader of the Labor party of Ukraine, said in his March 25 press conference in Lviv held at the ZIK information agency.

“There were no millionaires in the first Rada, 17 in the second, 200 in the third and 270 in the fourth and fifth. Hence, VR can be describes as a closed joint-stock company for the distribution of property. Now I am often asked “Why do businessmen come to parliament if they do not pass any laws?” My answer is “Just for the purpose of not passing any laws,” Mykhailo Syrota said, reflecting on the role of lawmakers in Ukraine.

“I support Pres Yushchenko’s stand on preserving various political parties. There are no parties at present, there are business clans. If a lawmaker has no right to vote the way he wants, why should he be elected to the legislature? Why should we have the imperative mandate if it deprives lawmakers of any choice? In a modern world there is no need to have lawmakers in a legislature – they may be replaced by computers. It is enough to give political parties the names of their leaders (for instance, the Symonenko bloc, Lytvyn bloc, Yushchenko bloc, Tymoshenko bloc and Yanukovych bloc, then count the mandates and distribute the national property in accordance with the number of mandates,” Syrota joked.
