By October, the existing runway in Chernivtsi airport will be modernized at the cost of $6 million. The project will be implemented by a Kherson-based company, Chernivtsi city communal property department head Oleksandr Shumejko and airport manager Volodymyr Kalyniuk told ZIK March 31.The runway will be extended from its present length of 2,216 m to 2,500 m. It will allow the airport to service larger planes. The land site needed for the extension was provided by the city against the backdrop of protests by the local Chagor community to cede their land.
The schedule and technology for airport modernization were set to minimize any inconveniences for its clients. An asphalt plant is to be built on the airfield to speed up modernization.
The airport staff will not be downsized for the term of repairs, being tasked with preparation of materials for airport certification.
The city will also earmark $400,000 to buy new equipment for the airport.
In October, visitors coming to celebrate Chernivtsi’s 600-th anniversary will use the new runway.
The project is expected to pay off in 15 to 17 years, says Volodymyr Kalyniuk. Due to its new runway, the city airport will be able start new flights and serve as a transit airport thanks to its proximity to the border.
