Germany alone blocs Ukraine’s accession to MAP, Oleh Soskin says

“We have to focus all our efforts on obtaining NATO Membership Action Plan in December 2008. At present, the only country opposing Ukraine’s NATO aspirations is Germany, as Gerhard Schroder-led Social Democratic Party has a lot of political clout. Germany foreign minister is also a member of SDP. In fact, SDP has a client-type relationships with the Putin party,” Professor Oleh Soskin, director of the Institute for the Transformation of Society and deputy head of NATO-Ukraine NGO coordinating council said at the forum in Lviv with NATO countries ambassadors June 17.“Putin’s force, and this is no secret, is a KGB-type force with a global network. That is why the Schroder-led SDP stands in the way of Ukraine’s accession to MAP. We have to step up criticism of SDP, as it was Germany that prevented Ukraine to gain its desired status in NATO. In retrospect, Germany betrayed Ukraine in 1918 when Kaiser troops were pulled out of Ukraine leaving it face to face with the Bolshevik Russia. In a similar move, the Hitler Germany hatched up a plan with the Stalin Russia and divided Ukraine after signing the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact, turning Ukraine into a war-ravaged land in the center of Europe. They must all be brought to account. Germany must compensate for the losses incurred by Ukraine, same as Russia – for engineering the genocide against the Ukrainian nation in the 30s. We have to make our case and demand compensations. We must stand up for ourselves as no one else in the world will do it for us,” Oleh Soskin added.
To implement this goal, Ukraine must reach political stability. “It would be a mistake if the so-called ultra-radicals can lay claims to rule Western Ukraine, and other dominate in Eastern Ukraine. It is equal to a betrayal. Those who embrace this division of power are, in fact, the enemies of Ukraine. How can the integrity of Ukraine be hostage to political goals?” O. Soskin questions.
Ukraine’s central objective, Prof. Soskin continues, is to persuade all NATO countries that Ukraine can become an able member of the alliance. “We must not waver in our determination to obtain MAP in December. As premier, Yulia Tymoshenko is to head a committee for accession to NATO. All her ministers must participate in the effort, including Education Minister Vakarchuk who had pledged, prior to his appointment, that he would work for the Euroatlantic integration day and night. A course on NATO integration must be taught in schools and Euroatlantic centers set up all over Ukraine. We have to concentrate our efforts on bringing up an informed new generation of committed supporters of Ukraine’s Euroatlantic course, O. Soskin concluded.

The big power block makes little countries safe has been shown to be rubbish by the events leading to WWI. The only thing that prevented the same two major power blocks created after WWII from fighting was not the power of the blocks themselves, but the power of the atom and the concept of MAD.
You might call those in Moscow baboons but they have the nuclear weapons that have ensured peace all this time during most of the cold war.
Is there an arch duke ferdinand in Georgia or the Ukraine just waiting to give WWIII a go?
The question we discuss usually is HOW to support the development of ukraine and wich way of development is the better one. I have to admit that i have difficulties to understand what if the benefit of choosing the way to Nato membership now instead of using the energy to build up viable institutions to run your economy better. In my eyes, so far you did not use your abilities of beeing part of western AND eastern sphere in any aspect. From a german point of view you have reams of choices to integreate in both directions and i think THAT will you make more independent. Your comments are only understandable if you see your country under constant threat. Maybe we do not have the feeling for that.
