Ukraine has no muscle to bar BSF vessels from returning to Sevastopol, Admiral Borys Kozhyn says

Ukraine has no technical capability to stop Russia Black Sea Fleet vessels to return to their base in Sevastopol. The only leverage include diplomatic efforts, the media and the public, the first commander of Ukraine Navy Vice Adm. Borys Kozhyn told ZIK Aug 11.

The admiral said Ukraine has demonstrated its resolute stand by banning BSF ships to return to Sevastopol. “Above all, Ukraine is defending its national interests,” Adm. Kozhyn added.

He is convinced Ukraine must build up its military presence on the peninsula, primarily by sending military personnel from other parts of Ukraine. It will also quell anti-Ukrainian feeling among Crimean residents, he concluded.

Borys Kozhyn says Ukraine has not lost information war with Russia. On the positive side, Ukraine began to talk about the problems in its relations with Russia which had been hushed up for years. Ukraine has also publicized its position as regards the Russian presence in Crimea, Adm. Kozhyn stressed.

To prevent the emergence of the circumstances when Ukraine will be entangled in the military conflict in S Ossetia due to the involvement of BSF navy vessels, the government of Ukraine, in accordance with the international laws, reserves the right to ban the return to Sevastopol of the Russian Navy ships that can be involved in the military operations against Georgia.
