“Why are you keeping mum?” – Leonid Kravchuk asks Pres Yushchenko

If presidential office officials have proof of Tymoshenko’s high treason and say they have handed it to prosecutors (this means that they have some documents) and prosecutors deny seeing any documents, then the question arises “Why does the incumbent keep a low profile and does not react to such farce?” Ukraine’s first President Leonid Kravchuk told ZIK Aug 21.

Kravchuk says recent statements by Yushchenko aides humiliate the country and its authorities. “It is abominable and indecent when officials accuse the premier of the gravest crime one can imagine for a politician, with the president buttoning his lips, Kravchuk adds. He doesn’t believe the officials could make such statements without the incumbent knowledge. Kravchuk poses a question: who the boss in the presidential office is if ordinary clerks dare to do whatever they want.

“I am not defending any one, I am for a law-abiding, tolerant and balanced relationships in the Ukrainian executive. I am opposed to ways when officials make irresponsible statements, and the incumbent doesn’t bring them to account,” Kravchuk stresses.

Tymoshenko, he goes on, has been accused of all crimes imaginable, and now the presidential team has accused her of the gravest crime, high treason. “They still have one more crime to pin on Tymoshenko. They can say that there hasn’t been Armageddon yet because Yulia Tymoshenko hasn’t engineered it. When they accuse her of not starting the Armageddon, I will say it out and loud they are nuts, and instead of going in for politics they should be going for treatment in a clinic,” the first president noted.

There shouldn’t be any dismissal of the cabinet as it is working effectively. It is stupid to sack the cabinet because the opposition wants this to happen. Kravchuk is convinced that even if the opposition manages to sack the cabinet, it won’t be able to create a coalition and appoint a new premier. Tymoshenko will only benefit in the end, same as she will from presidential office clumsy stunts, he says.

Comment by ZIK

Deputy head of the presidential office Andry Kyslynsky said he has information that the Russian leaders are bent of backing Yulia Tymoshenko in the presidential election – if she doesn’t support Georgia in the conflict in S Ossetia, the Aug 18 secretariat’s press release runs.

According to Kyslynsky, Viktor Medvedchuk will run Yulia Tymoshenko’s presidential campaign from a center created in Moscow. The center is also staffed with Serhy Kliuyev, Grigory Surkis and Oleksandr Zadorozhnyj. Humanitarian projects will be supervised in Ukraine by Dmytro Tabachnyk. So far, $1 bn has been earmarked to run the Tymoshenko’s campaign, he claims.

The presidential office will submit the incriminating information to prosecutors, the official declared. “Ukrainians are entitled to hear the truth about the sell-out of politicians who crossed the line and indulge in open betrayal of national interests,” Kyslynsky stated.

    • Yushchenko has proven, yet again, that he has and continues to mis-use and abuse the high office of President.
The SUN has recently reported that there is no substance to the allegations made by Yushchenko.
His false and substanciated allegations against Yulia Tymoshenko have brought him and the Ukraine into disrepute.
Yushchenko should resign for the sake of Ukraine without delay or face the damaging prospect of impeachment..

    • Yushchenko must now prove his accusations are serious and valid. If it turns out that he as acted irrationally and vexatiously then he has no other alternative but to tender his resignation without delay. It is unsatisfactory for him to try side shit and place any blame for wrong decisions on his staff. They act in his name. All that Yushchenko has achieved in Office is to destabilize and undermine Ukraine's economic and democratic development. His ongoing attempts to undermine Ukraine's sucessive parliamentary governments only perpetuates and drives inflation above and beyond the underlying inflation rate that applies to other counties neighbouring Ukraine. Yushchenko is the problem and not the solution.
