Yushchenko is Ukraine’s main hurdle on its way to NATO – Kost Bondarenko

While Yushchenko is still president, there is no future for Ukraine on its way to Europe due to his ill-considered foreign policy statements and stand-off with the cabinet, renowned Kyiv-based political expert Kost Bondarenko told ZIK Aug. 27.The expert gave a failing grade to Russia’s policy in the Caucasus and its recognition of independence of Georgia’s breakaway provinces. At the same time, Bondarenko is against criticism emanating from Ukraine. He says that, while Ukraine kept a tight lip when the US recognized Kosovo independence, a destabilizing development in Europe, it should have kept the same lip regarding S Ossetia and Abkhazia. “Protesting against Abkhazia and S Ossetia recognition of independence and keeping mum about Kosovo is a policy of double standards,” the expert notes.
There won’t be any isolation of Russia on the heels of the conflict in the Caucasus because in a modern global society the isolation of Russia is practically impossible.
It is clear that, based on the evaluation of Russia’s handling of the crisis, Medvedev, not Putin, is calling the shots. Therefore, Russia might change, becoming less diplomatic and more inclined to play hardball. He stresses that Russia demonstrated its ability to cash in on the problems facing its geopolitical rivals.
It makes no sense to start talking about the new cold war now, Bondarenko argues, as the world is more globalized and integrated than 15-20years ago. Besides, economic interests dominate over political ones.
Deterioration of relations between Russia and the West will not speed up Ukraine’s accession to NATO, as the West is wary of Russia while perfectly well aware of the situation in Ukraine: the country’s main impediment on its road to NATO is Viktor Yushchenko. “While Yushchenko is president, there is no future for Ukraine on its way to Europe,” claims Bondarenko, saying the incumbent is the major destabilizing factor in the country. The kind of the relationship his office maintains with the cabinet, numerous unconsidered statements on foreign policy will eventually lead to a situation when Yushchenko won’t be taken seriously and viewed as a beacon of democracy in Eastern Europe.”
