Lutsenko advises to adopt American presidential election system

Interior Minister Yury Lutsenko believes the American system of presidential elections with which he got acquainted in Denver, Colorado and which includes primaries and party conventions should be adopted by Ukraine, People’s Self-Defense press service reports Aug. 29.
“Primaries amount to a very interesting show.
I am an avid admirer of this system and want it adopted by Ukraine,
notably, primaries or preliminary elections among the candidates for
president from one party. Probably, it could be a fix for Ukraine’s
eternal problem of 2 Ukrainians who, instead of reaching a consensus
and uniting, prefer to declare themselves Hetmans and go it alone,”
Lutsenko said.
He praised American voters for their strong feeling
of belonginess to their team.
Despite their thorny history, Americans
were able to draw correct conclusions; the need to unite around
ideological agendas, not around ambitious individuals, Lutsenko
observed.
Lutsenko is convinced that Barack Obama’s nomination
for president can be more beneficial for Ukraine as it will add logic
to US foreign policy. “I had talks only with those US experts who will
shape up B. Obama’s foreign policy. Many of his advisors had worked and
lived in Ukraine. His team has a profound grasp of the situation in
Ukraine and our political players, and its orientation is absolutely
pro-Ukrainian. They are fully aware of the fact that the United States
is one of the countries that guaranteed Ukraine’s independence and
territorial integrity.
They have 2 priority tasks regarding Ukraine.
First, to promote Ukraine’s energy security. Second, to speed up reform in the judiciary and law enforcement, a precondition of other democratic reforms. Our talks focused mainly on these two issues and we have reached perfect understanding on both,” Lutsenko added. The victory of Barack Obama will lead to collective decision-making in the US foreign policy.
