Ukraine is on the back burner for Cheney. He came here to save the face of Republicans, political expert A. Yermolayev opines

The true reason for coming to Ukraine by US Vice President Richard Cheney is to save the face of the Republican party back home ahead of presidential election. His visit to Ukraine has not solved any serious issue, political expert and director of Sofia think tank Andry Yermolayev told ZIK Sept. 5.Being prominent in the party, he is seriously concerned over the likelihood of a Republican defeat in the coming election. It explains the focus on the countries that are US allies. It was the case with Georgia, now it is the case of Ukraine, Yermolayev believes.
“In fact, Cheney is implementing a program that has a domestic dimension. He demonstrates how many good partners the United States have in the world thanks to the efficient foreign policy of the Republican president. Americans are mainly concerned with their own domestic issues of boosting the Republican party image, as so far the US project of resolving the conflict in the Caucasus has not worked,” the expert argues.
Andry Yermolayev says Cheney’s visit does not resolve any significant issue for Ukraine. “All the talk about facilitating Ukraine’s membership in NATO is good only for the tabloid press. Cheney cannot resolve it since there is a critical mass of EU member states that are not prepared to vote for Ukraine’s accession or even for giving it MAP. Behind all this is an attempt to put on a bold face for the US… and our own daydreams,” he said.

- I think the "expert" interviewed forgot President Bush was recently in Ukraine and encouraged Ukraine's entry into NATO. It is not for domestic politics it is a sign of unity, support and solidarity. NATO will be more willing to accept Ukraine after she has a referendum. VP Cheney and President Bush cannot "resolve" any "significant issues" FOR Ukraine, it is Ukrainians that will do that. I hope. And since when did a "critical mass of EU member states" vote in members to NATO? Your "expert" was "daydreaming" during the interview.
