Andry Shil will eat his hat if Our Ukraine returns to coalition

“Do you really believe that Our Ukraine will return to the democratic coalition? I’ll eat my hat if it will. Under no circumstances this will ever happen – even if Tymoshenko resigns and BYUT faction lawmakers take their lives, one of key BYUT lawmakers Andry Shkil said, speaking at a press conference in Lviv on Sept. 9.

In his opinion, Our Ukraine left the coalition in the hope of boosting its approval rating and winning the next elections. At the moment, 70% of OU members were reluctant to leave the coalition but soon they were caught in the crossfire of telephone calls, many of them coming directly from the incumbent, he added.

“BYUT stands to gain from snap elections. Look at opinion poll results. Early elections won’t do any good for United Center or Our Ukraine. Most likely, only BYUT, Regions, Communists and Lytvyn bloc will make it to Verkhovna Rada,” Shkil predicted.

Regarding the likelihood of a coalition of BYUT and Regions, Shkil said the union is improbable, yet adding that it is premature to talk about such coalition.

According to Andry Shkil, a snap presidential election may happen if Yushchenko resigns, same as Pres Leonid Kravchuk did before. “But Yushchenko will never do such a thing,” he said.
