Will interior ministry troops fulfill Pres Yushchenko’s orders in case he opts for the state of emergency?

September11200821:48

“Given Yushchenko’s orders to use the interior ministry troops to enforce a direct presidential rule, the troops will fulfill them because the Constitution bids so,” Interior Minister Yury Lutsenko said, speaking in a press conference in Lviv Sept. 11.

He said the ongoing check of interior troops’ combat readiness continues. The decision on the check was taken in early February 2008 when the Orange leaders were still hugging and kissing. “The check continues, with Zaporizhia oblast units to be examined in a couple of days. The troops will have to make a 100-km march,” Lutsenko confirmed.

On the other hand, Lutsenko believes that, issuing his orders to the troops, Yushchenko will heed the realities of the country’s life, especially the risk to use the army and police units to resolve political issues. “Even if the president’s insiders and Baloha-led hawks in his office put up the chief commander to issue combat orders to internal troops, the troops will fulfill them, but I guarantee that, while I am interior minister, not a single police officer will fight the other police officer. There won’t be a repetition of dramatic events when traffic police had to stop interior troops [on their way to Kyiv to crack down on Ukrainians protesting on the Maidan square],” Interior Minister Lutsenko said.

    • So much for Yushchenko's rhetoric and claims to support democracy. To the contrary Yushchenko has never been a proponent to true democratic reform or democratic values. Democracy is based in rule of law and respect for the wishes of the people and their right to be duly represented. Yushchenko has indicated in the past and also in recent times that he will continue to act against the best interest of the Ukrainian people to push forward his own personal agenda. With Yushchenko it is only democratic if everyone agrees with him. Enough is enough.,it is time Yushchenko stood down and let someone else who as the support and respect of the people of Ukraine to fulfill the role of head of state.
