Speaker Yatseniuk loath to jump on Our Ukraine bandwagon, eager to create his own party with Bohatyryova

VR Speaker Arseny Yatseniuk says he may create a new political party – jointly with NDSC chief Rayisa Bohatyryova, The Profil weekly quotes him as saying. “It would be a wrong step for me to join Our Ukraine,” explaining that OU is a closely knit group of politicians with its own history and members.

He said though that there were several attempts to enroll him in OU. “These attempts, however, were met with harsh opposition from OU members, and I have nothing against such feelings,” the speaker said. He, therefore and with all respect for this party, cannot join OU, Yatseniuk summed up.

There is a segment of undecided voters or those who have become discouraged with their past political preferences. That is why the emergence of a new party is logical, not because of politicians’ will but due to a social demand.

He even said he may create a new party jointly with Rayisa Bohatyryova, National Defense and Security Council chief and former prominent Regions member. “It could be a very productive idea, I’ll think about it,” the speaker said.

Citing its own source, The Kommersant-Ukrayina reported Sept. 10 that ArsenyYatseniuk, No. 3 on OU 2007 roster, spent last week in active talks about his political future. At present, he is strongly opposed to join OU and is considering to go it alone, backed by his own party. According to the newspaper, Yatseniuk has had a talk with tycoon and Regions lawmaker Renal Akhmetov who pledged to back the creation of a new party with money and information support. Akhmetov reportedly put forward one condition: No. 2 in the new party must be Rayisa Bohatyryova, recently expelled from Regions.

    • Yatseniuk is known to be a strong supporter of Ukraine becoming a Parliamentary democracy and as such he is at odds with the policy and direction of Our Ukraine.
