40% of Western Ukrainians favor Tymoshenko-Yanukovych coalition

September23200819:22

Almost 40% of residents of Western Ukraine believe the coalition between BYUT and Party of Regions will positively influence the development of the country. Of these, 15.3% view the new coalition as a means of unification of Eastern and Western parts, 14.1% as a condition to ensure stable work of Verkhovna Rada, and 10.2% as a means to raise the living standards of Ukrainians. The poll results were made public in Lviv Sept. 23 by Olexy Antypovych, director of the Ukrainian Center for Studying the Public Opinion, Sotsioinform. Meanwhile, 60% of respondents believe that the new BYUT-PR coalition will remove Yushchenko from power and increase the dependence on Russia.

Yulia Tymoshenko has started her presidential campaign, 32% of respondents said. 25.3% of the polled say that the purpose of joint tactical voting of BYUT and PR is to oust Pres Yushchenko, with 17% of these believing the voting indicated Yanukovych desire to get back the power. Many Western Ukrainians link the latest developments in Verkhovna Rada with Russia’s intentions to reinstate its influence in Ukraine. About 10% have referred to Sept. 2 BYUT-PR vote in VR that clipped Yushchenko’s wings as a step to unite the East and West of Ukraine. They reside mainly on Viktor Baloha’s native turf, Zakarpattia, and the Chernivtsi oblast.

Over 30% of respondents, predominantly residents of Western Ukraine, called the BYUT-NUNS coalition the best-case scenario. Simultaneously, 17% of Ukrainians believe the coalition between BYUT-PR is a way-out of the present crisis. Incidentally, the new coalition between BYUT and PR is favored by residents of Zakarpattia and Chernivtsi oblast. 12.4% of Ukrainians, residing predominantly in oblast Volyn and Rivne support radical steps – the dissolution of VR and direct presidential rule.

The poll involved 2,000 respondents below 18 years of age. The representative error was +/- 2.4%. Ukrainians were interviewed by pollsters individually.

    • Zakarpattia itself is a divided community. With a large Hungarian population that would, given the chance support secession from Ukraine. They prefer and use the Hungarian Language, maintain Hungarian time and public holidays. this part of Ukraine was previously part of Hungary up until the partitioning of the region following the first world war. There support offered to Yushenko and Baloha is on the expectation that they can reunited the region with Hungary of Ukraine can secure EU membership. The key to Ukraine in securing EU membership is stability. The local Hungarian community may have misplaced their faith and trust in Yushchenko. They also would like Hungarian to be`adopted as an official language. Switzerland has four`state languages. They are by no means`wedded to Yushchencko or Bahola and if you look more`closely at the previous`election results the oblast is more or less divided into three political` camps.
