Any coalition without me will lead to total blackmail and free-for-all, Lytvyn claims

At present, there are 2 scenarios for Ukrainian lawmakers: either to create a new democratic coalition (titled the European Choice for Ukraine) made up of BYUT, NUNS and the Lytvyn bloc or a dual coalition of BYUT and the Party of Regions, Volodymyr Lytvyn said Sept. 25 while on a visit to Lviv.Lytvyn said he would be glad if the BYUT-NUNS coalition is restored. However, he went on, such a coalition will not be effective, as the ongoing blackmail will continue. Such coalition will drive Ukraine into a dead-end, Ukraine will be divided and the economy will stall.
“I am not supportive of overwhelming coalitions. The country in transition requires balanced decisions. Such decisions must be debated in parliament.
If a coalition numbers 250 lawmakers [the majority is 226 in Ukraine] , every deputy is aware of his responsibility, and everyone will be on the radar. In case the majority is made up of 370 lawmakers, many can claim their vote didn’t matter and the decision could have been taken without their vote, Lytvyn admitted.
If his party joins the coalition, it will place a huge burden of responsibility on the party faction. “We’ll have to assume responsibility for what is going on in Ukraine. Moreover, our approval rating might sink due to the economic slump and growing confrontation in society. Ukraine is faced with a grave disaster. At the same time, I am against upbeat statements in the coalition agreement. The budget needs to be worked on to curb any negative trends. We will face an uphill battle, not flirtations with the people.” Lytvyn said.
Lytvyn said his bloc can become a go-between for patching up the conflict between Our Ukraine and BYUT. He admitted also that the relationship between Tymoshenko and Yushchenko has turned into personal feud.
