Rada bans checks of media outlets during pre-election campaign

June 10, Verkhovna Rada passed the law banning checks of media outlets by oversight bodies during the presidential election campaign. The law was supported by an overwhelming majority of 361 lawmakers.Now the cabinet is to implement the law in practice, prohibiting checks of the media by executive and state agencies.
Tax administration will also cancel its checks schedule for the same period.
Another watchdog, the National Council for TV and Radio Broadcasting, will cancel its scheduled checks for the period of pre-election campaign till the end of 2009. The law is aimed at removing legal, administrative, economic and organizational obstacles for covering the 2009 pre-election campaign.
Under the law, a media outlet cannot be closed down other than by the decision of its founders or by the court.
