Ukraine to check Russia’s Black Sea Fleet for radiation pollution
June15200910:57
The Ukrainian government has announced a plan for 2009-2017 to check radiation levels of facilities and land sites used by the Russian Black Sea Fleet. The purpose is to locate the places of unsanctioned dumping of radiation-emitting materials. The plan is part of the program for Sevastopol’s social and economic development after the withdrawal of BSF from Crimea in 2017.The program also deals with the commercial use of the Sevastopol base after 2017. To implement the program, the Ukrainian authorities will take stock of the harbor facilities currently used by BSF under the 1997 agreement with Russia for temporary deployment of its fleet.
Ministries of transport and foreign affairs have been instructed to draw up by 2016 their proposals on the use of Sevastopol base facilities. The moorings presently used by Russia’s military will be transferred to the city’s sea trade port.
